Marketers frequently notice that their Google Analytics (GA4) or Universal Analytics reports don’t match Ads Manager. CTRs, conversions, and revenue figures often differ—and it can cause frustration, especially when allocating budgets or reporting ROI.
The good news: this is almost always expected, not an error. Understanding why it happens and how to reconcile differences is key.
1. Differences in Attribution Models
Ads Manager:
- Platforms like Facebook Ads or Google Ads default to last-click within the platform (e.g., last Facebook ad click or view within 7 days).
- Can include view-through conversions (people who saw an ad but didn’t click).
Google Analytics:
- GA4 uses data-driven attribution by default (or last non-direct click in UA).
- GA4 tracks all channels, not just paid ads.
Result: Analytics may credit the same conversion to organic search, direct traffic, or another channel, while Ads Manager gives full credit to the ad.
2. Differences in Conversion Windows
- Facebook Ads: Default 7-day click + 1-day view conversion window.
- Google Ads: Default 30-day click (configurable).
- GA4: Configurable up to 90 days.
A conversion that occurs 10 days after clicking a Facebook ad may appear in GA4 under organic search but in Ads Manager under Facebook Ads.
3. Cross-Device Tracking Differences
Ads Manager tracks users logged into the platform across devices.
GA4 tracks users via client IDs, user IDs, or cookies, which can’t always link different devices.
Example: A user clicks an ad on mobile, then converts on desktop. GA4 may count it as two sessions or credit the desktop channel, while Ads Manager attributes it to the ad.
4. Click vs Session Counting
- Ads platforms count clicks.
- GA4 counts sessions, which start when a user arrives at your site.
If a user clicks multiple ads, closes the browser, or doesn’t fully load the page, GA4 may count fewer sessions than clicks.
5. Differences in Event Tracking and Tagging
- Ads Manager automatically tracks impressions, clicks, and pixel events.
- GA4 relies on proper implementation of pageview events, conversions, and e-commerce events.
Misfiring tags, delayed firing, or missing parameters can cause discrepancies.
6. Filtering and Exclusions
- GA4 may exclude internal traffic, bots, or test sessions, but Ads Manager counts all clicks.
- Referral exclusions or filters may prevent GA4 from crediting some sessions to paid campaigns.
7. Cookie Consent & Privacy Tools
- Users may block cookies, disable tracking, or opt out of analytics.
- Ads Manager platforms still see clicks/impressions, but GA4 may not record a session.
This is increasingly important with iOS 14+ privacy updates and GDPR/CCPA consent flows.
8. URL Parameters and UTM Issues
Ads Manager may append UTMs automatically, but GA4 might misinterpret or lose them due to redirects or stripping.
Missing or inconsistent UTMs cause GA4 to credit traffic to Direct instead of the paid ad.
9. Time Zone Differences
GA4 and Ads Manager may use different time zones.
A conversion happening around midnight may appear on different dates in each platform.
10. Sampling and Reporting Delays
- GA4 may sample data in large reports or dashboards.
- Ads platforms typically report unsampled numbers but may delay final conversion attribution by 24–48 hours.
How to Reconcile Numbers
1. Align Attribution Windows
- Compare similar attribution models between GA4 and Ads Manager.
- For Facebook Ads, match click + view windows with GA4 reporting.
2. Compare Events or Conversions Consistently
- Focus on the same conversion event in GA4 that the Ads platform tracks.
- Check GTM or GA4 for proper firing of conversion events.
3. Ensure UTMs Are Correct
- Use consistent UTM parameters for all paid campaigns.
- Test for redirects or parameter stripping.
4. Check Time Zones
- Adjust reporting windows so GA4 and Ads Manager use the same time zone.
5. Understand Each Metric
| Metric | GA4 | Ads Manager |
|---|---|---|
| Sessions | Counts visits | Not counted |
| Clicks | Not counted | Counts clicks |
| Conversions | GA4 event/conversion | Includes view-through and clicks |
| Revenue | GA4 e-commerce events | Ads platform estimated revenue |
